The Ethical Responsibilities of Authors, Editors, and Reviewers for "Emerging science and technology"

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

Authors should follow the ethical guidelines below, and violations may result in penalties by the editors, including but not limited to the suspension of their publication rights.

1.The primary responsibility of authors is to ensure accurate representation of their research findings and an objective discussion of their significance.

2.Authors should recognize that journal space is a precious resource and treat it as such.

3.Reports of original research should include sufficient detail and references to public literature to allow peers to replicate the work. When requested, authors should provide samples that are not otherwise obtainable, maintaining their own legitimate interests.

4.Authors should cite works that have significantly influenced their research to guide readers in quickly tracing the early literature that aids in understanding the author's work. Authors are responsible for searching and citing original works closely related to their own.

5.Research papers should clearly indicate any potential hazards involved with chemicals, equipment, or procedures used in the study.

6.Fragmentation of research results for publication should be avoided as it excessively wastes journal space and unnecessarily complicates literature searches.

7.When submitting manuscripts, authors should inform editors of any related papers under review or in press, provide copies of these papers, and highlight their relation to the submitted work.

8.Simultaneous submission to multiple journals is not allowed. Preliminary results published in brief communications or letters may be expanded into full papers, but this should be disclosed to editors, and the preliminary work must be cited.

9.Authors should ensure the sources of all cited information are confirmed. Information acquired through private means such as conversations, correspondence, or discussions should be used only with explicit permission, as should information obtained through manuscript or grant application reviews.

10.Personal attacks must not be involved in academic disputes.

11.All persons who have made substantial contributions to the work should be listed as co-authors, and all co-authors should take responsibility for the research results.

12.Authors should disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could be perceived as influencing the results, and clearly mark the funding sources for their research.

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

1.Editors should treat all submissions fairly and judge manuscripts on their quality without regard to the author's race, religion, nationality, gender, age, or institutional affiliation. However, editors may consider the relationship of a submission to the author's previous or concurrent submissions.

2.Editors should aim to publish manuscripts as quickly as possible.

3.Editors are responsible for making publication decisions in a careful and considered manner. Reviewer selection should be based on their expertise in assessing the quality and credibility of manuscripts. Direct rejection is permissible if a manuscript does not meet the journal's standards in scope, depth, or English expression.

4.Editors must not disclose any content of manuscripts under review.

5.Editors should respect the intellectual independence of the authors.

6.Manuscripts submitted to the journal by editors should be handled by other editors or editorial board members without conflicts of interest.

7.Editors should not use the contents of unpublished manuscripts without the author's consent.

8.If there is sufficient evidence to suggest an error in a published paper, editors should facilitate correction, with the text of the correction provided by either the discoverer of the error or the original authors.

9.Authors may request the exclusion of certain reviewers; however, if such requests are suspected to compromise the fair review of the manuscript, editors may decide to use those reviewers.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

1.Given that manuscript review is an indispensable step in the publication process, every scientist has the responsibility to conduct fair reviews.

2.Reviewers should immediately return the manuscript to the editor if they feel unsuited to review the submitted manuscript.

3.In the spirit of maintaining high standards of scientific and linguistic expression, reviewers should objectively assess the quality of the manuscript, the level of experimental and theoretical work, and the reasonableness of interpretations and inferences. Reviewers should respect the intellectual independence of the authors.

4.Reviewers should be aware of any conflicts of interest that may arise from the manuscripts they are reviewing; if there is a suspicion of conflict of interest, they should not review the manuscript and immediately return it to the editor; alternatively, they should submit their conflicted review opinion for the editor to handle.

5.Reviewers should not have personal or professional relationships with the authors or co-authors that could bias their review.

6.Reviewers should maintain confidentiality of the content of the manuscripts under review and should not disclose or discuss it with others; if consultation is necessary, they should inform the editor of the identity of those consulted.

7.Reviewers should provide sufficient explanation for the basis of their assessments to facilitate understanding by editors and authors; references cited in the review comments should be relevant and avoid unsupported statements.

8.Reviewers should alert authors to significant related works by peers that they may have failed to cite, and should not suggest citing their own papers unless it is relevant.

9.Reviewers should return their comments promptly. If they do not have the time to review the received manuscripts, they should return them to the editor as soon as possible or notify the editor of a possible delay in review, providing an estimated time for the review to be completed.

10.Unpublished information from the manuscripts under review should not be used or disclosed without the author's consent.

11.Review comments should not include personal attacks.
